Most people are allergic to urushiol, the oil found in poison ivy, oak, and sumac, leading to a similar rash across all three plants. While the rash itself is not contagious, it can be transferred via contaminated skin or clothing. Interestingly, pets can carry the oil on their fur, allowing owners to develop a rash without the animals themselves being affected.
