In January 1992, a container ship lost a cargo of 28,000 rubber toys, including ducks, frogs, beavers, and turtles, into the ocean during a storm. Chuck Bryant describes this as "the cutest little ecological spill in history," yet it became an unexpected boon for oceanographers like Dr. Curtis Ebsmeyer, who used the toys to study ocean currents 1.
