Conflict Conversations

Conflict conversations, often perceived negatively, are essential for addressing important issues. Charles Duhigg emphasizes that these discussions, though tense, are crucial for meaningful exchanges. He notes, "Conversations are actually good. Right. Usually the most important conversations we have are conversations, a little bit of tension in them." 1 To prevent these conversations from escalating, Charles Goddard suggests a three-step process: recognizing the conversation's nature, repeating back in one's own words, and confirming understanding. This approach helps maintain focus and prevents emotional crescendos that derail productive dialogue 1.

   

Active Listening

Active listening is key to navigating conflict conversations effectively. Charles Duhigg introduces the "looping for understanding" technique, which involves asking deep questions, paraphrasing responses, and seeking confirmation. This method ensures that both parties feel heard and understood, reducing suspicion and fostering open communication. Duhigg explains, "What just happened in that moment is that I asked you for permission to acknowledge that I was listening to you and you said, and you gave me permission to acknowledge that." 2 By proving that we are truly listening, we create a foundation for more constructive and empathetic conversations.
