Kissing Bug Research

A unique community science program has emerged to study kissing bugs and Chagas disease, allowing the public to contribute to vital research. Since 2013, over 8000 kissing bugs have been submitted, revealing a concerning 50% infection rate with the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi. Researchers are also mapping genetic variants of the parasite, exploring potential health implications, and conducting blood meal analyses to determine the species from which the bugs have fed.
