Viral DNA Legacy

Retroviruses can integrate their genetic material into our DNA, leading to the fascinating phenomenon of endogenization, where viral DNA can be passed down through generations. Astonishingly, about 8% of the human genome is derived from these viral sequences, some of which play crucial roles in processes like placental development. Additionally, certain endogenous retroviruses may influence our immune system and are linked to various diseases, including autoimmune disorders and ALS.
