Mumps Virus Mechanisms

The mumps virus primarily targets the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract and salivary glands, particularly the parotid glands, leading to inflammation and swollen cheeks. While it can also infect the central nervous system, this is less common in humans. The replication of the virus causes direct damage to cells, while the immune response can result in additional tissue damage and complications.
