Childbirth in the late 18th century was a perilous ordeal, especially when complications arose, as doctors lacked modern tools and anesthesia. One shocking procedure, known as symphiostomy, involved cutting the pelvic bone to assist in delivery, highlighting the brutal methods of the time. Two Scottish surgeons even devised a chainsaw-like instrument to make this process more efficient, demonstrating the lengths to which they went to address the dangers of childbirth.
