I struggle with addiction; I start drinking or using drugs, and it gets bad quickly, with 3-day hangovers and week-long withdrawals. I’ll get sober, but a week or two later, I relapse. Sometimes it's worse than others, depending on how fast I decide I need to stop. I’m severely depressed and tired of living like this. I get no joy or tranquility, which makes me give in to drinking and drugs again. I desperately want to be sober and find peace. Is there anything specific I can focus on, such as vitamins, gut health, or other lifestyle changes, to break this vicious cycle?
I am a 59-year-old female who is 100 lbs overweight. I was very active and kept in shape until I experienced multiple instances of sexual assault and childhood abuse. As a result, I started drinking alcohol heavily and eating unhealthy, leading to a weight gain of over 100 lbs. I got sober and have maintained sobriety for 12 years. My diet is mostly clean, but I prefer small snacks throughout the day rather than sitting down for meals. I also deal with 24/7 atrial fibrillation, and surgeries or procedures to normalize my heart have not been successful. I desperately want to lose weight and live a long life. Despite visiting doctors and cardiologists, they seem to only want to keep me on medication instead of addressing the underlying issues. I feel stuck and lost. I stopped really living fully after the traumatic events mentioned above, and I have not been in a relationship since I was around 27. My self-image is low due to these life events and my current weight. I'm desperate for help. I am a good person who loves others, and I want to learn to love myself and my body. What steps can I take to lose weight, improve my self-image, and live a fulfilling life?
