Origins of Sufism

The term "tasawwuf" refers to the journey of becoming a Sufi, with its roots tracing back to early ascetic practices. The most accepted theory links "Sufi" to the Arabic word for wool, symbolizing a renunciate lifestyle. Other theories suggest connections to the Prophet's dedicated followers or concepts of purity and wisdom, yet the woolen garment remains the most compelling origin story.
