Episode Highlights
Starting Meditation
Steve Schlafman shares his transformative journey into meditation, which began during a trip to France. He was inspired by the book "The Power of Now," which shifted his focus from living in the future to embracing the present moment. This led him to learn Vedic meditation, a mantra-based practice that helped him achieve a transcendental state.
I got home from that trip and I call my friend Sydney. I was like, hey, Sid, I know you have a meditation practice. I would love to learn.
---
Steve practiced this technique diligently for two years, meditating twice daily, which profoundly impacted his lifestyle and mindset 1 2.
Evolving Techniques
Steve's meditation practice evolved as he explored more advanced techniques, including a ten-day Vipassana retreat. This experience was transformative, leading him to adopt mindfulness and loving-kindness practices. He later worked with a Buddhist teacher, which introduced him to the Shamatha technique, focusing on balancing attention and awareness.
The purpose of this meditation technique, in some ways, and I'm probably butchering it, but is really to ensure that you're cultivating a balance at all times between attention and awareness.
---
Steve now practices meditation for up to an hour daily, using it to cultivate awareness and presence in his interactions, both personally and professionally 2 3.
