The Pantheon

Origins

The Pantheon's origins trace back to the aftermath of the Battle of Actium, where Augustus and Agrippa's victory marked a new era of peace for Rome. Agrippa, tasked with overseeing much of the city's construction, built the original Pantheon around 25 BC, which was later destroyed by fire in 80 AD 1. The current structure, often attributed to Emperor Hadrian, was likely initiated during Trajan's reign, with Apollodorus of Damascus as the architect 2.

Transformation

The Pantheon's transformation into a Christian church in 609 AD marked a pivotal moment in its history. Pope Boniface IV converted the pagan temple into the Church of St. Mary and the Martyrs, preserving the structure through continuous use 3. Its architectural marvel lies in its unreinforced concrete dome, which remains the largest of its kind in the world 4.

The Pantheon dome really is a wonder of ancient engineering, and it's evidenced by the fact that it remains the largest such dome in the world today.
