The Hubble Space Telescope's journey began with significant advocacy efforts. Gary Arndt highlights the roles of Spitzer and Nancy Grace Roman, who were instrumental in pushing for the project. Roman, the first female executive at NASA, lobbied both NASA administrators and Congress throughout the 1970s to secure approval for the telescope 1.

The Hubble Space Telescope faced numerous technical challenges, including a significant issue with its primary mirror. Initially, the mirror was ground incorrectly, causing spherical aberration that rendered the telescope's images blurry 2.

The mirror was one of the most finely polished telescope mirrors ever made. Yet the grinding process was done incorrectly.
