The expansion of wine production beyond Europe in the 15th and 16th centuries marked a significant shift in viticulture. Gary Arndt explains that the Spanish attempted to cultivate wine in Mexico, but faced challenges due to the climate and pests that were not present in Europe. Despite these setbacks, regions like Argentina, Chile, and Peru succeeded in producing wine, reducing the need for imports from Spain 1.

The climate was warm and not too dissimilar from what could be found around the Mediterranean. However, they were never able to make the same quality of wines as they could in Europe.

South Africa also emerged as a notable wine producer, with its Constantia region gaining favor among European royalty by the late 18th century 1.

   

Crisis Response

The wine industry has faced numerous challenges, notably the phylloxera crisis in the late 19th century. This pest, native to North America, devastated European vineyards by attacking grapevine roots, threatening the entire industry. Gary Arndt notes that the solution involved grafting European vines onto American rootstocks, which not only saved the industry but also led to the development of modern wine regions like Champagne and Bordeaux 1.

For a while, it looked like the entire European wine industry would be destroyed.
