Earliest Evidence

The history of tattoos stretches back thousands of years, with some evidence suggesting they may be one of humanity's earliest art forms. Gary Arndt explains that the earliest hard evidence of tattoos comes from Otzi the Iceman, who lived around 5300 years ago and had 61 tattoos on his body. These tattoos, often placed on areas affected by arthritis, suggest a medicinal purpose 1.

The misidentification of tattooing materials has led some to suggest that we may actually have archaeological evidence for tattoos dating back as far as 50,000 years.

Otzi and Mummies

Otzi the Iceman's tattoos are not the only ancient examples; other mummies also reveal the historical significance of tattoos. Gary Arndt notes that two 5000-year-old Egyptian mummies display some of the earliest illustrative tattoos, depicting animals and geometric designs 1. These tattoos likely served various purposes, from medicinal to protective, as seen in the tattoos of a 4000-year-old Egyptian priestess believed to protect during pregnancy.

While Otzi has the oldest known tattoos, there have been other tattoos found which are almost as old.
