    Surgery & Recovery

The surgery itself was a complex and lengthy process, lasting initially seven to eight hours. Michele's husband was understandably anxious, but she remained optimistic, saying, "I just thought, hey, I'm getting this done and I'll be fine." 2 However, complications arose, requiring an additional two to three hours of surgery 2. Post-surgery, Michele faced a challenging recovery, including issues with keeping food down and electrolyte imbalances, which extended her hospital stay to two weeks 3.

    Transplant Guilt

Michele grappled with feelings of guilt over receiving her organs so quickly. She rationalized, "If it wasn't going to be me, it was going to be somebody else," which helped her cope with the complex emotions involved 4. The rarity of her match added to the surreal nature of her experience, as she was the only person in the country who matched the donor organs 4. Despite the emotional turmoil, Michele expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the miraculous nature of her transplant 5.
