  • Early Diagnosis

Madi's journey with Type 1 Diabetes began at the tender age of seven, following a series of alarming symptoms like rapid weight loss and excessive thirst. Her stepfather, who had some medical knowledge, eventually recognized the signs and rushed her to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a blood sugar level of 700 1. Despite this early intervention, Madi faced significant challenges growing up, including frequent hospital visits and a lack of support from her stepfather, who would often leave her at the ER alone 2. The family dynamics were further complicated by the loss of her mother and a custody battle, which left Madi and her siblings in the care of a stepfather who was not always supportive 3.

It was awful. I was constantly in the hospital, in and out. It got to a point where he wouldn't even see me in the hospital. He just dropped me off at the ER.

These early experiences shaped Madi's resilience and determination to manage her condition despite the odds.

    Management Evolution

Madi's management of her diabetes has evolved significantly over the years, particularly with the introduction of technological aids like the Freestyle Libre sensor. This device marked a turning point in her care, helping her reduce her A1C from 14 to 8, a level she hadn't seen since her pregnancy 4. However, her journey was not without setbacks, as she struggled with diabolemia, an eating disorder where she omitted insulin to lose weight, leading to severe health consequences 5. The use of continuous glucose monitors like Dexcom has been instrumental in stabilizing her blood sugar levels, allowing for real-time adjustments and preventing dangerous spikes 6.

After I got the sensor, my diabetes management did a complete 180. My last A1C was eight, so I went from 14 to eight.

These advancements have empowered Madi to take control of her health, demonstrating the critical role of technology in diabetes management.
