Understanding Bone Density

Dr. Stephanie explains that bone mineral density is related to porosity, not the size of the bones. Osteoporosis and osteopenia result in more gaps between bone minerals, making them more susceptible to fractures. The goal is to decrease porosity and increase bone density, not make the bones bigger.

    • Can you help me understand if improving bone quality can help reduce the risk of fractures even if bone density is low? I heard you discussing bone density with Dr. Stacy Sims, and I work as a yoga teacher teaching people who are impacted by cancer. Treatment for cancer and hormone therapies often mean my students have osteopenia or osteoporosis. For some students, it is unlikely they will be able to lift the weights needed to build bone density, but could yoga help with bone quality and reduce the risk of fractures? I am hugely grateful for any help you can give me on this topic. Thank you so much. Vicky Fox
