John Dean and Kai Marshland began WindBorne Systems as a project within the Stanford Student Space Initiative. Initially, they aimed to extend the flight duration of conventional weather balloons, which typically only last about two hours. This early work led to the realization that their technology could fill a significant gap in weather data collection, prompting them to turn their project into a startup 1.
