  • Wild Awakening

Jonathan Foust shares a profound spiritual awakening he experienced as a child, which significantly influenced his life. Growing up on a farm in Pennsylvania, he recalls a moment of merging with nature, feeling indistinguishable from a tree and perceiving stars as part of his being. This experience left him feeling different and isolated, as his attempts to share it were met with misunderstanding.

I really feel that that experience dramatically shifted my life. The best way I can describe it, this little six, seven year, eight year old kid. I was leaning against this big pine tree behind this farmhouse. And the only way I could describe it in my little boy's brain was the sense of first merging with a tree.

This early encounter with a deep sense of presence sparked his lifelong exploration of meditation and spirituality 1.

    Spiritual Journey

Jonathan's spiritual journey began with his Quaker upbringing, which emphasized direct connection with the divine. He discovered transcendental meditation at a Quaker prep school, which allowed him to cultivate inner listening and calmness. This practice became a cornerstone of his life, leading him to explore various meditation techniques over the years.

There's this great phrase that Quakers use where they say, just don't do something. Sit there. So I kind of grew up with that.

Eventually, he transitioned to insight meditation, finding profound awakening through intense retreats, despite their initial brutality 2 3.
